Crowds gather for A Level Results Day, Kingdown School
Sara Edwards, Headteacher confirmed that today Kingdown School is "extremely proud" and that their A Level results are a "real tribute to the dedication and commitment of the staff and the hard work of the students".
This year 93 students were entered for A Level examinations, with the average score point as 701 (the target was an average of 667, so students have achieved above expectations). 27% of entries were at A*/A grade, 48% of entries were at A*/A/B grade, and 78% of entries were grade C or above. The overall pass rate was 98%.
From 10.15 this morning, a nervous-looking group of teenage students waited outside in the rain (pathos for those who had not done so well), ready to enter the hall at 10.30 to receive their results.
One of top students, Alex Smith, with 3 A*s, told us he "felt fantastic", and wants to go on to study medicine. Not yet having a guaranteed place (even with these excellent results) he was quickly off to hit the telephones using the "clearing" system to obtain a place. Alex said he was "determined" to study medicine, but "had to be flexible" on where he might study it.
Elsewhere, Patience Mbah received 2 As and 1B, and is going to study Maths and Economics at Manchester. Patience has been at Kingdown School since Year 8, said she was "really excited" about future plans. She also amusingly remarked, when discussing her excellent results, "I'm not brainy...I just blend in"!
Some students had heard directly from their University of choice even before receiving their actual results. Rachel Cox, who received her target of 2As and 1B, obtained her place at Exeter University to study French and Philosophy. She received notification by text message from the University congratulating her on her place...before she even knew her precise results. How technology has moved on since the days of nervous students crowded around results pinned to a wall...
One teacher this morning remarked, "It's a big day for both the students and the teachers. We've been teaching some of these kids for 7 years, and today is the last day we will see them - so it can be quite emotional".
Congratulations to all A and AS Level students at Kingdown School who got the results they were hoping for - and good luck for the future!
