At the moment anybody in need of urgent medical help on a Saturday or Sunday morning can ring their GP's number and be referred to a clinic at Warminster Hospital. At other times they are currently referred to Trowbridge.
From 8th July the service at Warminster hospital will be extended to cover every weekday evening from 7pm - 11pm: on weekends and bank holidays the service will be available from 9am -11pm. There will also be a mobile facility which means a car and driver will be available so that the clinician can make home visits - a clinician may be a practice nurse or a doctor.
Dr Andrew Cowie, Chief Executive of Wiltshire Medical Services, explained: "Wiltshire Medical Services is responsible for all out of hours medical care across the county. This change aims to make better use of our resources."
"It is important for patients to know that this service is only available after ringing for an appointment. If patients turn up without ringing first, they may find the clinician is out on a visit. "
Information about the out of hours service can be found on the Wiltshire Medical Services website but anybody needing medical help out of hours should ring their GP's number first.
Comments
This is such good news. There have been several attempts over recent years to reduce the services provided at the hospital, culminating in plans to close it altogether. These were fought with great energy by the people of Warminster and as a result, the hospital was saved, albeit with a reduction in beds. Consquently, the more out patient facilities that can be provided at this fine hospital, the greater the service to the community and, at the same time, the hospital's future must be more secure. Let us hope that this is part of a continued expansion of what the hospital and it's wonderful staff can do for the people of our area.
