Pedestrian Crossing in the Market Place

Is this true? Have you noticed there are two identical signs with red and green men, one above the other on each side of the road? I have wondered why there is not one on the opposite side. I keep looking across to see if the green man is showing.

I was told it is a mistake that there are two on one side and none on the other.

The men who came to put up the signs were going to put one on each side but they found two lots of holes for screws for signs facing the pavement and none for signs facing across the road - so they put the signs up where the holes were ......
Is anybody else confused - has anybody else heard this story as to how this happened? Should we be asking for some more holes so that the signs can be moved?
