Friends sought for Warminster's Old Town Hall

Northwood Estate Agents are lending their support to plans to bring the Old Town Hall back into use by sponsoring the first advertisement for a new Friends group.
-
Friends of the Old Town Hall required.
Martin Bradbury, branch director, said "Our office on the corner of Weymouth Street and the Market Place is directly opposite this building which I think looks awful and needs to be restored. The pigeons land on our premises as well and every morning I have to wash down the front of the shop. I'd like to support the town's efforts to improve the premises and we have paid for the advertisement in this week's Warminster Journal."
The advertisement asks anybody who is interested in becoming a "Friend of the Old Town Hall" to complete the form and hand it in to the Journal Offices at 36 The Market Place.
George Jolley, who together with Cllr Chris March, is co-founder of the new Friends group said, "We are hoping to build up a register of names of people who will be willing to help with, not only fund raising, but by giving their time to help with physical work, whether it be skilled or otherwise.
We are hoping to hear from anybody who is willing to give this venture their support. I can be contacted direct on 216242 and Chris March's tel no is 217889."

ReportThanks for this interesting bit of background to the Old Town Hall - do you happen to have the link to the ITN film clip?

ReportAs an "expert" on the "Warminster Thing" I'm often asked where the Town Hall actually is!
The building was the venue for the infamous town meeting in August 1965, when the town was besieged by the press and public, all clamouring for a sighting of the phenomenon. On the internet, if you search, there is a brief clip filmed by ITN of the meeting, and is a nostalgic slice of social history.
It's wonderful to see that at last, the hall may become another quality venue for the town. Buildings such as htis are part of our nation's heritage, and as such should be looked after.
