When a fire engine drew up outside the old town hall this evening passers by were looking for the smoke.  In fact there was no fire and Warminster Fire Brigade had come to help clean up the building before it is open to the public this weekend as part of the Civic Trust Heritage Open Days.

Because the empty building has become home to a flock of pigeons its walls have become covered in their droppings. Led by Watch Manager Chris Trimby, the fire fighters used two hoses to wash down the lower half of the stone building which was built in 1832.

The old town hall,  which has been empty since 2004, is currently in the hands of receivers and there is a move afoot to restore the bulding as a prestigious centrepiece for the town.

George Jolley,  who leads a team of enthusiasts interested in bringing the hall back into the ownership of the town said, "I'd like to thank all the volunteers who have helped clear up the rooms inside and the firemen for coming along today to clean the outside.  They've done a magnificent job."

Warminster's Old Town Hall will be open to the public from 2-4pm on Friday 10th and Saturday 11th September.

So good to see this happening. The Town Hall is a part of Warminster's history, it was given to the people, and was a beautiful building inside and out. The Assembly Rooms, and other such buildings are grand for their purpose; but they will never match the Town Hall for quality, architecture, location, historical value...Nor will they match them in the memories of many people. I wonder what do others remember about happenings at the Town Hall?
