Malaby Biogas Ltd say this is a ground breaking development which will provide renewable energy through a process called anaerobic digestion.
It is planned that the biodigester will generate renewable heat and power for new commercial business units based on the redundant agricultural buildings at the Farm.
Thomas Minter, director of Malaby Biogas says, “We are pleased to see work starting on site. We will use local contractors and suppliers wherever possible and, once operational, hope to see additional local employment created by the biodigester and the new business units. We are now taking applications for construction and operations posts”.
The anaerobic digestion process is the natural bacterial breakdown of organic matter which produces methane, carbon dioxide and a low carbon biofertiliser called digestate. The digestate will be used on farms to reduce their dependence on chemical fertilisers and the methane and CO2 will be used to generate low carbon heat and electricity for use in the business units and for export to the electricity grid.
Thomas Minter: “This is a very green process and is well established in many countries. In these difficult economic times it is good to see some concrete evidence of innovation and investment at the local level”.
The work is expected to take 9 - 12 months to complete, with the site becoming operational in early 2012.
