Alan Richardson and his team were out in wind and rain on Saturday afternoon to put up the lights and trees for Warminster’s Christmas decorations.

Starting in Silver Street the Christmas Lights team were climbing ladders in front of each shop to put up lights and 110 trees right through the town to East Street.  The display includes 20 individual lines of lights and 15 decorations for lamp posts. This year there will be a new decoration across the road from Hallmark cards beside the traffic lights..

The team plan to complete the work over the weekend ready for the switch on next Saturday.  “Next Saturday there will be a Christmas Market during the day in the Market Place and the lights will be switched on around 4.45pm,” said Mr Richardson, co-ordinator of the volunteers who make up the Christmas Lights Committee.

"The costs of the display are shared," he explained. “All the shops  pay £35 to include the tree and their contribution to the cost of the lights.  We also have a grant from the Town Council. As we have to be insured when we climb the ladders, we are employed for this part of the work.  Costs involve a bill of £1,350 for the electricity used and within the next two years we have the extra cost of changing all the bulbs to the low energy type,”

Over the years Warminster has become known for its excellent display of Christmas lights. “Many people have said they are some of the best in the area,” said Mr Richardson.

Thank you to all those hardy souls who braved the wind and weather to bring such joy at Christmas, in the form of trees and lights.  It is no mean feat to produce this display and I hope that by adding a comment here, the hard working team will know how much their efforts are appreciated.  THANK YOU TO THEM ALL!
