Mayors from surrounding towns and representatives from Warminster’s voluntary organisations joined members of the Town Council at the Minster Church of St Denys this morning. Town Crier Phil Seddon was at the entrance to greet members of the congregation as they arrived in sunshine to the sound of the bells ringing out from the tower.
Warminster’s Mayor, Cllr Tony Nicklin, welcomed his fellow mayors in an opening address for the service which was conducted by the Rector, the Reverend Harvey Gibbons assisted by the Revd Nick Brown and the Revd Carole Owen. Hymns included “Praise My Soul the King of Heaven” and “Guide me O Thy Great Redeemer” and the choir sang the anthem “View me, Lord”.
Readings were by the Mayor and Town Clerk, Heather Abernethie, and Cllr Tony Field gave an address. Reminding the congregation of the history of the town he spoke of the nearby iron age hillforts and the corn and wool trade which had brought prosperity to the area. He praised volunteers as the real gems of today’s town, closing with the suggestion that, “the more we put into these voluntary efforts, the more we benefit both as individuals and as a community.”

Comments
It seems that from your comments you understood that the volunteers were praised by a cleric. The quote was from the address which was given by one of our town councillors.

ReportOne cannot help but wonder how much the clergy know about volunteering. My experience of the church, is that they get paid for everything. Christenings, weddings, funerals etc. Strange, when we consider the first among volunteers. The Lord Jesus himself. In the gospels says he. "...freely you have received, freely give." Voluntary work is indeed commendable, but being a cleric does not make one an expert on the subject. If you doubt me, try and get something from the Anglican Chuch for nothing.
