Members of Warminster Civic Trust attended the recent monthly

Board meeting of the Warminster and Villages Development Trust to discuss how

each approached the future of the Old Town Hall.

This building which stands on the prominent corner of Weymouth Street and

Warminster’s Market Place has become a public eyesore.  It has been left unoccupied for years and has

a history of failed usage over the last 19 years.  It is currently on the market for £400,000

and it is believed that the vendors are not willing to drop this price.

The building is Grade II listed and can’t be

demolished.  It is a building in private

ownership so the investment of public money to the direct benefit of the owner

would need to be carefully argued.  There

are also other calls on the increasingly limited funds available. An example is

the well established and popular Athenaeum which too is seeking funds for

refurbishment.

The Development Trust’s position remains one of waiting

until circumstances make its involvement feasible.

The Annual General Meeting of the Civic Trust is on Friday 7th

May at 7 pm in Dewey House.  The Trust’s

involvement in this building will be on the agenda.
