How many people in Warminster have seen the Warminster Jewel?
-
The Warminster Jewel (copyright Salisbury and South Wiltshire Museum).
It is on display in the treasure case of Salisbury and South Wilts Museum, which calls it one of the most intriguing objects in its collection. The jewel is a large crystal bead mounted in gold strips with a small blue domed stud in the centre and believed to be part of an aestel or pointer which was sent out by King Alfred the Great (871-99) to his bishops.
Found by a metal detector In 1997 on Cley Hill, it is the subject of its own information leaflet produced by the Museum. Details can be found on www.salisburymuseum.org.uk/collections/romans-saxons/warminstger-jewel.html.
On a wet holiday afternoon it might make an interesting visit?
The Museum, in Salisbury's Cathedral Close, is open from 10 - 5 Monday to Saturday but will be closed on Friday 1st January.
