and Bavaria for
past few weeks for “Chalet Girl”, a new film written by a Warminster writer. Last week Tom Williams, who lives in
Bishopstrow with his wife Kate and two children, flew out to Garmisch-Partenkirchen to take a cameo role
in his first film to go into production.
“It’s all very exciting,” says Tom, “I’ve been writing films
for ten years and to have one produced has been my dream for a long time.”
Tom first started writing the film six years ago, and was
inspired by a lifetime of fun skiing holidays.
“I wanted to try to capture some of that excitement of being on top of
the mountains. It’s such an amazing
feeling, and so different from how most of us spend our daily lives.”
“The production gathered momentum in 2007 when a producer
optioned the outline script, and then came close to being shot in 2009 in France. Now it has attracted an all-star cast
including Bill Nighy, Bill Bailey, Brooke Shields and hot young English actor
Ed Westwick, from the television series ‘Gossip Girl’, and has been filming
since early March.”
Tom was determined not to miss out on the action himself. “I
was meant to go out to St Anton in March to see how the filming was going but couldn’t
go as my wife Kate was expecting our second child. Bertie has now arrived safely so I went out to
Bavaria last
week for a quick visit. This time I took part as an extra on a ski run and as a
drunken man in a bar. Not much of a
stretch, really.”
Tom says he has always loved going to the movies and he wanted
to write one that he would enjoy watching. “By tradition this country has more
of a name for making miserable kitchen sink films about drugs - I wanted to
write something that I would be happy watching with my mother!”
Chalet Girl is primarily aimed at teenagers. It tells the story of a girl – played by
Felicity Jones, who used to play Emma in the Archers - from a working class
background who gets a job as a chalet girl in a luxury ski resort. She tries out snowboarding for the first time
and finds she is rather good at it. She
also finds out that she rather likes the son of the chalet owner (played by Ed
Westwick), but has to get past her parents (Nighy and Shields) first.
Chalet Girl is expected to hit our screens in February of
next year.
