First Great Western train at Warminster station.
Representatives from local councils joined with rail
enthusiasts at the launch of the TransWilts Community Rail Partnership last week.
Graham Ellis, vice-chairman of the
Group, spoke to a meeting of around 40 people who had come to Bridge House, Trowbridge, to hear about plans
to campaign for improvement in the rail services between Salisbury and Swindon. At
present there are only two trains a day which link these destinations
directly. The Group would like more trains on this route so that the service can be used by commuters.
The meeting heard from John Hill of the Community Rail Partnership representing the Bristol to Weymouth line and Cllr Richard Gamble, Wiltshire Council Portfolio Holder for Public Transport, spoke of local support for the project. Warminster Town Councillor Tony Field said after the meeting, “Any initiative which increases the frequency of trains through Warminster station and offers more choice of routes must be a good thing for the town."
Volunteers are needed to help run the group and anybody
interested should contact Graham Ellis at http://www.transwilts.org.uk/
