  • The outing began in the village of Shrewton up a sunken track leading onto the Plain.
  • Ladies Bedstraw and knapweed flowered in the hedgerow.
  • Our destination was Parsonage Down Nature Reserve - poppies and grasses lined the route.
  • Military activity is to be expected on the Plain - a low flying helicopter often drowned out the song of skylarks.
  • Distant cattled dotted the landscape.
  • The Nature Reserve is made up of lowland grassland. It is a working farm owned and managed by Natural England. Several types of orchids are listed as growing there -
  • only one, the pyramid orchid, could be found in flower.
  • The grassland is covered with the mounds of anthills - .
  • - some are covered in the purple flowers of Thyme.
  • Sheep and cattle graze on the 276 hectare Reserve.
  • Yarnbury Castle is a nearby Iron Age Hill Fort - not accessible from this direction.
  • Common Rock Rose and Meadow Sweet are widespread in the area.
  • Looking south across the Wylye Valley.
  • Looking north over some of the 300 sq miles which make up the Plain - the largest area of chalk grassland in North West Europe.
