It’s National Book Week and at St Georges Primary School Warminster it’s been a special day of celebrating the written word, with the help of costume and characters from favourite children’s books. This event focuses the whole school’s attention on books, reading and writing. ‘It’s all about encouraging our children to discover books and the joy of reading, as opposed to just using language on a computer screen’, said Mrs Louise Croker the new acting Head Teacher. ‘The children will benefit from increased understanding of stories and improve their own writing, in areas such as descriptive language.’

All the children, staff and parents came to school dressed as characters from their favourite book! Mrs Kate Saunders the year 4/5 teacher who arrived in the classroom dressed as Michael Morpurgo’s Private Peaceful, complete with authentic World War One uniform said ‘Everyone entered into the spirit. We had traditional characters from Pippi Longstocking and Sherlock Holmes through to newer stars of the children’s book world, such as Harry Potter and The Gruffalo. It was a great success and certainly captured the children’s imaginations.’
A regular part of life at St George’s is the running of themed days or weeks, such as Art Week and Maths Challenge Day. Others such as living history and geography days immerse the children in their learning through, for example, art, role-play and food.
